Wikipedia article

This article is about an older version of DF.

Sea monsters are really rare, horrifying freakish creatures with flippers, tentacles and pincers. They cannot move on land*, but are still dangerous to any dwarf that comes near them due to their enormous size.

(* Sea monsters only appear on evil maps, and any creature on an evil map can be undead, and any undead aquatic creatures can walk on land - this would pretty much be a worst-case scenario.)

Its nearly impossible to meet one on adventurer mode unless you swim around on evil oceans, but you'll probably have other things to worry about in such a place, like undead fish.
