Tarn Adams assigns a 4-piece version number to each dwarf fortress release.

Example: 0.27.176.38c.

The first number indicates dwarf fortress being in either alpha/beta state, it will be "1" when it is no longer in beta. The second number is an approximate percentage of dwarf fortress' total completion, Tarn Adams explains this in his interview with Front Row Crew, [1]. The third number is the total number of up-till then full-internal releases of dwarf fortress. Please [Verify]. The final number's purpose is unknown. The letter is increased by one alphabetically for each bug-fix release of a version.
