Multiple dwarves may use the same table, but they will receive a small unhappy thought if this happens. A good general rule of thumb is to have enough tables and chairs to serve one fifth of a fortress' population at any given time. Because dwarves do not eat very often, this should be more than enough to avoid any unhappiness.

The wisdom of this strategy was questioned on [http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=52208.msg1982843#msg1982843 The v0.31 Little Questions Thread] and it was suggested this would only lead to them being quote "unhappy and talkative". The implication is that much more (than 1/5th of the population in) tables and chairs would be needed. Can anyone confirm, either way? --[[User:Thundercraft|Thundercraft]] 12:45, 16 February 2011 (UTC)
I have the impression that 30 tables in the general dining hall is more than enough for a fortress with 200 dwarves... (that is playing v0.31.16), 20 may even suffice --[[User:MathFox|MathFox]] 13:26, 16 February 2011 (UTC)
